We will cover everything from what's happening in the worldof comics, shows, and fandom to the hard hitting stories in the news today. Now, here's your host, Chad, and Kevin. Hello and welcome escape reality comics podcast Show. I'm your host, Chad, my co host, Kevin, how are you doing today, Kevin?
Kevin:Oh, just fine. Like usual. How about you?
Chad:Oh, I'm doing pretty good and recovering from the crappiest of the crappiest Memorial days I've ever had to deal with on top of thinking about my friends that died overseas and died just in general. I also put down my dog on Memorial Day so that definitely sucked. But he's in a better place. And I'm we're gonna talk about this right now cuz I'm tired of being sad about my dog being put down.
Kevin:What are we going to talk about? What? What is it goodness,
Chad:dude, there's so much for today, man. It was ridiculous. I'm super excited for today. So the title for today is Super Gaiman Bros vs. Fans. So today we're going to be talking about the Super Mario Brothers movie new cut. Apparently they got they came out with a whole new they found like different cuts and different deleted scenes. So we're going to talk be talking about that. And we also gonna be talking about the new Sandman come out Netflix and what Neil Gaiman did to his fans on Twitter. So it's definitely going to be one of those days. I'm excited for for the Sandman portion. And the new new cut because I we saw a little bit of the movie trying to find like what we try to find like the rap at the end.
Kevin:Here. There's supposed to be a post post credit rap scene.
Chad:I don't know if we couldn't find it. It could be I mean, you know this thing, dude, I was like, we're just talking about we were I was eight years old when that movie came out. I remember seeing it in theaters.
Kevin:Yeah, I wish I did watch it in theaters. I don't know. I would have loved it. Oh, yeah, but I don't know how I discovered the Mario Brothers movie. So you know? I don't know if you guys out there listeners are at all fans of this 1993 movie. Oh my god, I freaking love this movie.
Chad:dude as a kid I thought was awesome, man.
Kevin:Oh, yeah. I didn't care you know?
Chad:Yeah, exactly. It was so cool. I thought was the biggest like I played Super Mario Brothers when I was a kid. You know, we grew up with Nintendo. And Dude, I was like, Oh sweet. You know Super Mario Brothers is out and you watch it now it's probably more of a big joke but as a kid you thought was the best thing in the world?
Kevin:Oh god. Yeah. And there's like a part of me still that I feel like maybe Yeah, I might still enjoy this movie more than I should
Chad:dude it's Like half the stuff I forgotten like honestly, we saw the intro of it and like dude what what's up with what's up with this bomb? This is obviously post 911 This is not like I mean pre 911 this is not that would not fly today.
Kevin:The Yoshi egg inside a canister or yeah it looks like a bomb and
Chad:and then you see these nuns bring this frickin case and like this bring the bomb right in Why don't cha, that's that's an awesome idea.
Kevin:In New York City good plan
Chad:I know right of all places.
Kevin:So yeah, so this new cut of this movie is a fan cut. So they released an extended cut of this the 1993 original movie. And as they discovered deleted scenes, and they like they entitled it the Morton Jankel cut. So it's an honor of the film's husband and wife directing team. So I don't think the husband and wife have done a whole lot together since this movie. This movie was a disaster on set even so Oh, was it? Oh, God. It was really imagine. I don't know what was going on in the 90s. But
Chad:do what wasn't going on the 90s bro my god
Kevin:This This was on the top list to me that I can recall of movies that they were changing the script. They were onset changing everything every day. So the actors and actresses would get on there and have no clue what the hell was happening.
Chad:that everyone's coming out with their own cut. I mean, like, Thank you Snyder cut for making every single movie that would be coming out with a whole different cuts.Yeah, it's gonna be something else. Well, this one's a fan one so yeah, that is it. Oh, yeah, exactly. Yeah, exactly. But still I there's gonna be a cut but forever director. Watch Marvel's gonna come out with their own cut.
Kevin:Oh, yeah. They have been talking about that. Actually. We can probably talk about that in another podcast. Oh, doubt that like Guess the end game has tons of footage, new footage that they could show off?
Chad:Exactly. I just want to tell if Snyder, Mr. Snyder ever listens to us and I highly doubt he will. But in my in my imagination he is listening to us now. I'm just letting you know that every single theater worker hate you. There's no, there's no special cuts, there's no extended cuts or cutscenes or was a post credit scenes to every single movie.
Kevin:But yeah, that'll be a thing in the future like a director and producers like, Alright, I can't let my movie leave the theater. So it's, I found something else. So this is next year's part.
Chad:Do the same thing with Star Wars did and it's all nodes. This is the original one, but we're coming up with a whole new one. And just boom, there we are, again, you never know, theaters and lines up the wazoo and I've got to remember those two.
Kevin:So back to my one of my favorite movies of all time talking about Mario Brothers. So this Morton Jenkel Cut Alright, so I already like the the cut name. So the original theatrical release of this Mario Brothers movie is 104 minutes. So the extended version rents a full 125 minutes of beautiful movie bliss. Oh my god. So that's Yeah, 20 minutes of additional scenes.
Chad:I mean, that isn't so bad as like, add another hour, or 30 minutes. I
Kevin:mean, oh, yeah.
Chad:I mean, probably an hour watching this. I mean, it's been such a long time. I can't imagine I did. I think I'd enjoy the movie. Don't me wrong. I enjoy the movie. More like more of a nostalgia point of view.
Kevin:Yeah, I think I'm gonna watch it this weekend. I think I'm not gonna watch this Jankel cut.
Chad:Yeah, I might watch him tomorrow to be honest. Just watch the whole thing. So. Yeah, that's gonna happen. I'm going to have my kids watch it with me.
Kevin:Heck, yeah, I'm gonna do too. But yeah, the editing of this movie has been reworked like entirely so they it was restored by a filmmaker named Garrett Gilchrist. He's known for his restoration on the thief, which I'm not familiar with, than like a PC game. Yeah, you remember the thief. So that is that? Yes. I restored the video. And then he also was famous for restoring the cobbler and many Muppet projects. So yeah, I you know, from what we've been watching. They're using a lot of mixed sources. So they got VHS, and then randomly in the cut, it was like a high quality DVD version. For what I can tell when we were jumping around in the movie. God, so yeah. I don't know. I'd never been seen before seen footage is the part I want to see. It's like, What's in there?
Chad:Oh, yeah. I mean, you have to watch it. I mean, it's one of those things. If you grew up in the 90s. And you grew up watching this, you have to watch. I mean, I don't know. You have to watch it. It just seems like I'm gonna watch it. I mean, I'm gonna be probably horrible movie and I'm probably gonna, like hate my eight year old self. But you know, like I said before, if I felt watches more than the nostalgia portion I'll actually enjoy not so much the movie maybe. But you know, we'll see.
Kevin:It's like Dennis Hopper. I just remember the days of the that was like glue hair. It was terrible.
Chad:spiky freakin 80s 90s. Early 90s. Look, the makeup, the punk rock type look.
Kevin:Yeah, so I guess some of that never before seen footage, an original release involving Bob Hoskins. Mario, what? You know, the actors john like was almost Luigi. So they're, they're competing with a mafia affiliated plumbing company. So I wonder how much that's going to be shown in the movie. So
Chad:I mean, having a fight that they would like, just play Mario.
Kevin:Yeah. There is a mafia against them now So Exactly.
Chad:I was thinking that we were talking about a remake. They're not talking about we're not talking about a remake. Jesus Christ. I don't know what the hell. Oh my goodness.
Kevin:You want them to do that remake this whole movie?
Chad:You know what? Honestly? Yeah, I do. I watched this year that to be honest. It could be just as bad. I'll still watch it. It would be Mario nowadays.
Kevin:You know, we'd lost Bob Hoskins. Yeah, nearly.
Chad:He wasn't getting really noise. He didn't have the to me, Mario, you know?
Kevin:Yeah. And when I was a kid speaking of Bob Hoskins that messed me up when he was playing Mario because I was hardcore watching Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
Chad:Oh, dude that's a classic.
Kevin:Yeah, another one of my favorite, he says. So it's like seeing him in this and then just like once in a while. I'm like, Okay, he's supposed to be Mario. But wait, he's from that another?
Chad:Yeah, exactly. Exactly. Yeah, I don't know who would play Mario if they did a remake. I guarantee you. I mean, I think we talked about like a while ago where they were actually talking about having a new mario movie but it's gonna be all animated and shit. I don't think it was going to be like, an a real action, you know, type movie, but I don't know I would be horrible. I have no hope video game movies I'm telling that right now. Not well No.
Kevin:I mean, Sonic did well so.
Chad:Oh yeah Sonic is like the freakin like you said on my rant A while ago it mean that's the standard that's like that's where you need to be.
Kevin:Yeah, I mean they let that get it out just for the freakin pandemic but yeah, yeah, so yeah, so this movie if you guys as big fans as at least I am definitely watching it and I know Chad's definitely,
Chad:definitely watching it.
Kevin:I'm very I already got it downloaded. So he just got to go over to the Internet Archive.
Chad:You know, honestly, I just cannot wait for my oldest, my oldest daughter who's nine years old to watch it and just have those looks that she goes every time she gets like, What the heck's going on? Yeah, this is this is why this is why dad screwed up. Honey. This is why the puppeteering and all that stuff. Yeah, that's what we had. I grew up with that I have the fancy animation, the CGI. What do you have now? This is why we the 90 kids, 90 kids are screwed up because of that. You got that? What was it? You had that one character? He was like, small lizard head with a huge body.
Kevin:Yeah, those those really koopas in that movie?
Chad:Yes, dude. Oh my god. Those things used to give me freakin nightmares as a kid, man. Just like I still think of them. I still I can still picture what he looks like and everything.
Kevin:Yeah. Oh, exactly. Talk about more terrible puppeteering or whatever that was. Yeah. So yeah, if you guys want to watch this version of, it's called the Morton Jankel Cut. Yeah, you just go to archive.org and then just search the name of this this cut. Dude, I'm totally watching this tomorrow.
Chad:Yeah, I might watch it tonight. No, no I'm not watching it tonight. It's crazy.
Kevin:I want to see my daughter's reaction. Like, I just can't, my son's gonna have an attention span. And then he'll cry will notice the random scenes, but my son
Chad:will probably fall in love with it and be obsessed with it. He's in this phase of he's really obsessed with monsters right now.
Kevin:ooh yeah so you're really obsessed with Yoshi in this
Chad:though, dude. Yeah, I'm like he had a siren head siren head like fix to that for a while. And he everything was siren hit. He will talk about siren head. He will talk about cartoon cat. Long horse. I'm he's he's a he watched this. He be like, Mario, who knows?
Kevin:Yeah, he's gonna love it a bit. All right, so what do we got about Sandman?
Chad:Oh, my God, Sandman, dude. All right. So I'm excited. I'm putting this out right now. I'm friggin excited. They finally coming out with a Sandman series. It's not gonna be a movie, it's going to be series. They actually want it to be movie at first. Thank god they didn't because the episode seems to be a lot better format for them. So Netflix has
Kevin:get more stuff, you know? Oh, yeah.
Chad:I enjoy the series more than the movie portion of it. Because it usually feels like when it comes to a movie. I mean, I mean, sandman would be awesome as movies don't get me wrong, but they would have to be the grittiness of the grid. And it seems like that series versus movies is the series. It seems they can actually pull it off. Not so much a movie where they put out all this whole bunch of action in two hour movie. You know, we're an hour and a half movie or whatever. But it is what it seems that's just my opinion. But yeah. So but Netflix is has officially announced the cast of for Sandman. So they're actually coming out with Netflix series. So I'm excited for this one. So a lot of people out there probably like what is Sandman, I mean, it same. It was big. It was definitely big. It was started in 1989. I think it stopped at 93 heads like 75 or 73 series for a long series, I guess. And it's freaking and went out really well. Neil Gaiman is actually going to be the producer, this the author of the book of the who actually wrote Sandman is gonna actually be the executive producer for Netflix's series. So that's gonna be some exciting, but for those who is wondering who is Sandman, so the main character of of the Sandman is called dream. He's also known as Morpheus, who is one of the seven endless now this is a group of is basically a group of other entities. So the other endless are destiny, death, desire, despair, delirium, formerly used to be called delight and destruction. The comics, the comic book blends of mythology and history in its harsh setting within the DC universe. The Sandman is a story about stories. And how Morpheus the lord of dreams is captured in learns that sometimes Change is inevitable. So for those of our listeners actually listen to our podcast, this is going to be like two weeks ago when we had Joey on. And we're talking about comm book investing and all that stuff
Kevin:Yes
Chad:for those actually Listen, those who are actually interested in investing in books. This is one of the books to keep an eye on man. Sandman number one is definitely one of those books that you want to see. Just watch this watch the price. As right now about the 200 I think, was it. I was going on eBay, I was just doing a quick little search on I wanted to see if I can get one right now a non graded decent condition is going for $250. And that was a bid. So who knows at 9.8 graded comic book, once again, it's it's CGC. That's one of the bigger ones and so the built mainly what people go after, but zero to 10 in the 9.0 a night to a 9.2 is going to close to like over $300 right now. So that's bid but that's one of the one of the books that you want to keep an eye on because excellent go up in price. Once someone buys for 300 right now, watch soon as the Netflix series comes out with Sandman, it's going to go up, I would say $100 Now I'm not gonna say it's gonna skyrocket skyrocket, like The Walking Dead. It could, but I'm not gonna say it's gonna be that big of a jump. But, for example, the walking dead, like, over $1,000 for 9.8 book. So comparing to what it was before when the Walking Dead came out was like, I saw like, 203 $100
Kevin:so it could I mean, Netflix is so huge, you know, that's the one of the streaming juggernauts and yeah,
Chad:we'll see it depends on the popularity of show. It's kind of weird, too, because a lot of speculators be like, oh, okay, this is they're coming out with sandman series. We got to get this book now. I mean, you can do that. I mean, but I would, you know, I probably just wait to be honest. But that's totally up to you guys. If you want to spend the money I would probably get it now and then wait for hopefully this is a good series. I have no doubt at will though, to be honest, because Neil Gaiman has been fighting to stay away from bad movie writers. So we'll definitely see how this whole series goes. But um, but let's talk about the cast the Sandman. So the cast of the same man it was we have Tom Sturridge, the cast as the main character dream who was the lord of dreaming? Then we also have Gwendolyn Christie. Now this one kind of it kind of irked me this one, to be honest. So she's playing Lucifer on this one as the ruler of hell. And yes, this is technically the same character as Tom Ellis's Lucifer and Netflix and the Netflix show right now. Who knows? I haven't, but they didn't get Tom Ellis. I'm actually getting, you know, I'm in the mix. I'm kind of irked in actually excited at the same time. Then we have Vivienne Acheampong so we got Vivienne Acheampong is Lucienne, the librarian of the dreaming, so she's in charge of keeping basically dreams, logging and all that stuff about dreams. The next we have Boyd Holbrook is the Corinthian an escaped nightmare that wants to taste what the world has in store, which means eyeballs. This character has more teeth than eyeballs quite literally. He has no eyeballs at all his teeth for eyeballs. It's like another mouth. So he likes to eat eyeballs. That's what he's that's his thing. So then we also have a timing Lannisters Charles dance as Roderick Burgess as the Charlotte as the charlatan and magician who imprison dream for such a long time. So I'm actually excited for this character. He's one of my favorite actors, to be honest. Roderick breus I mean Charles dance excuse me, Charles dance has to be one of my favorite actors. Then we also have Asim Chaudhry as Abel the first victim and Sanjeev Bhaskar as Cain, the first predator they are both chiefs and loyal servants of the dream realm who can who cain consistently continuously kills Abel and unlike the Bible, he doesn't stay dead then we have Kirby Howell-Baptiste as death and we also have Mason Alexander Park as desire and Donna Preston as despair the twin sister of desire so this is really cool.
Kevin:So yes, that's quite a cast
Chad:Yeah, within there's more there's a lot more I shortened it. There's no way I was like, I'm not. I'm not gonna do the whole cast and crew but we're I'll do the main characters of it. And and like who's in The endless group and all that stuff. There's no way in hell we do the whole cast. So then. So there's a bit of a problem. Well, not so much a problem of production, just toxic fans. Shortley after Neil Gaiman announced the cast, he got nonstop complaints about the cast.
Kevin:Well, of course, of course,
Chad:yeah, exactly. You know, you're thinking like, you know, might be something real bad, right. You know, whatever, have a problem with this cast member or whatever. Well, complaints about one cast member, particularly, Kirby Howell-Baptiste So why her? What did she do that was so bad that fans would wouldn't want her to cast as death? I'll tell you what the crime that she did, buddy. The crime of she committed is being a person of color, portraying a non person of color. That's the whole thing. You know, that's why people are pissed off.
Kevin:As to as to bad and again, you know, many, it's just not surprising.
Chad:It's stupid. So Gaimen has been nonstop battling these people on Twitter dude. And this is what he says this. This is what Mr. Gaming had to say. On Twitter. I give all the fucks about the work. I spent 30 years successfully battling bad movies of Sandman, I give zero fucks about people who don't understand or haven't read Sandman whining about a non binary desire or that death isn't white enough. watch the show make up your minds? I mean, good for him. Yeah, very honestly. He doesn't give two shits what these toxic fans think of? I'm personally excited to see how he portrays death and how he portrays desire. So I I'm all for it.
Kevin:Yeah. That's awesome. It's like it kind of makes me think back on our, our podcast, when we talked about the Superman that's gonna most likely black.
Chad:Oh, yeah. And people are pissed off about that, too. And I cannot wait for that movie to come out. That like I said on my TikTok A while ago, a while ago, I had just a few minutes before we started podcast. The best thing in the frickin world for me. It's better than a cup of coffee. It gets my blood flowing every single time I see it, to see pissed off racists. I love it. Absolutely love it. That's the whole show from like, what you see these actors. Oh, we're coming out with Superman who's black and see this whole bunch of people being pissed off about it. I'm just loving it. I'm loving every minute. I'm sitting there with my cup of coffee just drinking like, yes. Yes. Give me more. Give me more.
Kevin:Suck in the caffeine and your energy. Oh, dude. Yeah,
Chad:I just love it. It's freakin awesome.
Kevin:Yeah, you know, honestly thinking about this going back on Sandman, the series I I'm kind of glad it is on Netflix. You know, it's like, I wonder how many other streaming platforms that we're we're trying to get this, you know, like the only one Sandman I so Netflix landed it
Chad:is I'm glad that someone's coming out. But honestly, my personal opinion, I would think HBO, HBO, Max would just kill it. You pull it out of the water, to be honest. But I am happy that someone picked it up and someone as big as Netflix did. So hopefully you can actually like say, hey, that's how we want it. And Netflix cannot leave him alone. I highly doubt that'll happen though. But we'll definitely see.
Kevin:Yeah, so what do you know? What do you fans of comic books and video games? What do you guys if you guys want to have some kind of talk about it? And we would love to kind of put that on the podcast. You know, if you guys have any kind of thoughts on it.
Chad:Just leave a comment. Be Awesome.
Kevin:Where can they leave a comment
Chad:on BuzzSprout and and our social media outlets on Facebook? TikTok, Twitter, Instagram. You know what? We haven't used YouTube in a while. So we asked to start do we start putting out videos on YouTube? We just haven't done YouTube because YouTube is such a such a hassle to be honest. But yet, we don't get that very many audience members on YouTube at all so and we don't have cameras so that's gonna be another thing that we have to work on. For sure.
Kevin:If you guys want to see our mugs, you know, Chad's much prettier. So Oh yeah. Handsome, handsome.
Chad:Definitely more prettier and handsome for sure. Buddy, I love you. You're awesome.
Kevin:Glad you do love you buddy.
Chad:Well, that would that said as all the time we have for today. You guys have a nice wonderful day to the cup of coffee in the morning to the glass of Marlo at night.
